Protecting Renewable Energy Infrastructure

A renewable energy operator managing windfarm operations through Siemens SCADA systems required a comprehensive cybersecurity risk assessment to protect turbine operations and associated substation systems. The primary challenge was improving cybersecurity resilience while preserving the high level of reliability essential to renewable energy generation.

Operational Challenge

The operator needed a detailed cyber security risk assessment of its Siemens SCADA environment supporting turbine operations, along with connected substation systems, including RTUs and protection relays. The assessment needed to address both operational and cybersecurity risks without impacting system availability.

Our Methodology

Our team of engineers conducted a structured OT cybersecurity risk assessment aligned with IEC 62443-3-3 security requirements. The scope included review of the WPS SCADA architecture, turbine communication protocols, remote connectivity mechanisms, and substation integration points.
